Melankholia is a small, dark place tucked against the edge of the universe. Separate from the human world, it consists of a city built of concrete and iron, the shell of an empty metropolis now broken down and with a much smaller population than it seems it was meant to house. The sky is perpetually obscured in heavy clouds and storms are common. The shades who live there are human-like creatures with a few general traits. They tend to be small and underfed, tenacious little creatures who use their gifts and whatever else they can find to survive. Their world gives them a place to stand, and nothing more than that. In three directions the city goes on forever with no end. In the fourth, dark water does the same. Nothing grows in the city. Nothing but Shades, and nightmares. Although the human world is a separate construct, the two worlds share a unique bond. You can get human radio stations when the weather is calm, and Shades get all of their goods from dreams that humans have had. However, human nightmares crawl across their world, hideous monsters that leave trails of death and destruction in their wake. Shade life expectancies are short, and their personal histories are just stories filled with sorrow and loss. Of course, some people in the city don't take this sort of life quietly. There's Evangeline, now going by “:Zig”:, a professional nightmare hunter who's anything but down and out with the current state of affairs. Her partner, the quiet, strange man named Caius. A bizarre scientist and his headless associate, Amadeo and Maria, respectively. Zig's brother Marc, the local and reclusive regent and her mentor Volt who manages to be both enigmatic and playful. Enter a world populated by everyone from Celeste, an assistant manager of an apartment building to a woman who styles herself The Baroness of the East District. A world this unusual breeds unusual inhabitants, but all of them want to survive This novel is a compilation of the 2014/2015 webnovel of the same name.
